Counter Strike: Install And Play On Ubuntu 10.10 Through Wine

Linux Counter Strike is a world famous Lan game. Mostly Players were preferring Windows family platform to play it,while many of them wanted  open source for other works. But they couldn’t do this due to game addiction [:)]. Now Open Source Ubuntu is also providing the platform to play all Steam and Non-Steam games.

To play Counter Strike on Ubuntu 10.10 follow these easy steps:

  • If You are Steam user then read Installation of PlayOnLinux .
  • Go to System >> Administration >> Synaptic Package Manager.
  • Enter your password to Authentication.
  • Now search Wine and mark the Wine1.2-dev.

  • Click on Apply to installation.

  • Now to install Counter Strike, Right click on Counter Strike setup and select Open With Other Appliaction >> Winhlp32.

  • Wait to  complete the installation.

Now its time for play

  • Go to Application >> Wine >> Program >> Counter Strike 1.6[Folder] >> Counter Strike 1.6 [exe].
  • Now open game’s Console and commandfps_max 101 [Its improve your frame per second].

It was the installation for the users who have single platform [Only Ubuntu 10.10]. But Some users have more than one platform [ Windows as well as Ubuntu ].

If they have already installed Counter Strike on Windows then  no need to install Counter Strike on Ubuntu again. They can use already installed Counter Strike in the Program File of Windows. Follow these steps to use already installed Counter Strike:

  • Start Ubuntu and login
  • Go to Places >>Computer, and open the Folder where you installed Counter strike on Windows Machine.
  • Now Right click on hl.exe and open with Winhlp32.

Now Enjoy
Hope this will helpful for you, for any query or help post comments.

you have to reinstall wine package and try again.
And confirm that hl.exe process is not running in system monitor at the time of CS setup installation.

petyuska2345 November 16, 2010 at 12:49 AM

I am receiving this error when I try to run the game by opening hl2.exe with winhlp32;

SteamStartup() failed: Steamstartup(0xf,0x0033E48C) failed with error 108: The local steam service is not running.

However, the service is running?

Rahul Dev November 29, 2010 at 8:06 PM

Hi Sam
This error might happen if there is an extra copy of Steam.dll in one of the game directories.
There should only be one Steam.dll in your Steam install directory, like :
In Windows-
C:\Program Files\Steam\steam.dll
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\steam.dll

In Ubuntu –
/home/server/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files

To find errant steam.dll files:
Start > Search
then enter steam.dll in the all or part of the file name box and click on the search button.

You should only have one Steam installation in one Drive on your system so you should only have one copy of steam.dll in one drive. If you are using dual boot [more than one OS] then install Steam in different Drive.

hi Jai
thanks for your comment
Ubuntu 10.10 is not good in graphics as windows.
Now open nvidia setting and change your Resolution and Refresh rate.
Use highest refresh rate and resolution according to your graphics card.

me having same problem

PacMan May 5, 2011 at 10:49 AM

I followed the steps you told.

i tried playing a map. while the map was loading the following message occured..

The program Czero has encountered a serious problem and needs to be close. We are Sorry of inconvinience.

This can be caused by a problem or a deficiency in wine. You may want to check http:/ for tips about running the app.

if the problem is not present under windows and has not been reported yet you can report it at http:/
